The last country I visited before the UK-wide lockdown was Hungary, more specifically the capital city Budapest, and I’m so glad I was able to indulge in their culture before lockdown.
I am grateful enough to have Hungarian friends who were able to give me a local’s whistle-stop tour of this beautiful city. Budapest’s architecture was truly breath-taking, with every street housing a completely different vibe to the next.
There were old ruins, Victorian-style houses, and buildings of every colour you could imagine. Bursting along the bustling streets of cobblestones were hidden gems, my favourite being a minute café housing the best chimney cakes. Original flavours came in walnut, coconut or cinnamon, with your choice of filling, mine being Nutella. This dessert was so delicious I was contemplating moving to Hungary just to eat these every day.
Budapest is a city steeped in rich history and grandeur, offering a little bit of something for everyone. If you’re into your nightlife, the ruin bars are the place to be. Rooms upon rooms of quirky décor and styles add to this lavish scenery. If this isn’t your style, Budapest is also home to some of the most beautiful historic buildings, with its own Parliament lining the river.
Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever visited, and I hope to have the pleasure of coming again very soon.
